CSS preprocessors are all the rage at the moment. After much umm'ing and ahh'ing we settled on Less, mostly because it is used in Twitters Bootstrap project which we had just began using. The basic idea of a preprocessor is to bring some of the niceties like variables and functions to CSS that are then compiled into a normal CSS file. In a simple usage case you can imagine wanting to change a commonly used colour on your site. Working directly with CSS you would need to search and replace every instance of that colour when it is used in a situation that is now incorrect. Working with a preprocessor you can change a variable which will then cascaded throughout the file when it is compiled down. Compare the various preprocessors and take one for a spin.

This year will be an exciting year for Oz Servers. We have embarked upon attaining our GITC accreditation and ISO9001 compliance. We have already achieved GITC accreditation, with the road to gaining GITC accreditation being relatively smooth, all paperwork being lodged successfully and without incident. Let's hope ISO accreditation goes as well.

First up this week are a couple of issues that have come to light. PHP 5.3.10 has been released to fix a rather nasty little regression so if your are running at the bleeding edge it might be prudent to investigate further. Over at 456 Berea Street they have noticed an issue with defining a max-width for an image in IE8 can in certain instances make it disappear.

So you stare at your existing site. You stare at the blank piece of paper in front of you. If you have other stakeholders their input is usually limited to vague hand waving at your competitors sites and an assertion that things need to be "better". It can be a daunting task and if you have a big site with a lot of legacy code it can seem all but unassailable, but as long as you break it down into small, bite size pieces it's a task that can be down right enjoyable.
